九色视频 鈥 Candidates for Town Council president are speaking out against recent sign vandalism ahead of Easton鈥檚 May 6 election.
In a letter to police Thursday, current President Frank Gunsallus said he was notified that a swastika was placed on one of his campaign signs at the corner of South Aurora Street and South Lane. He said that came after 鈥渟ignificant vandalism鈥 of a number of his other signs.
鈥淭his act of hate has escalated the situation into a deeply troubling reality that demands our collective attention,鈥 Gunsallus wrote.
Don Abbatiello, the current Ward 2 representative running against Gunsallus for the presidential seat, said theft and vandalism do not belong in the town鈥檚 elections.
In an interview Friday, Abbatiello said he informed Gunsallus of the defaced sign after discovering it while campaigning in town Wednesday.
鈥淲e obviously disagree on some issues, we鈥檙e running against each other, but there鈥檚 no reason to deface people鈥檚 property,鈥 Abbatiello said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no reason to bring hatred into this at all. We are still a community. We鈥檙e still neighbors. We should act like it.鈥
Gunsallus contacted the Easton Police Department after seeing the South Aurora Street sign. He also says campaign signs have been stolen from his home.
Abbatiello says a few of his signs have gone missing as well, though he鈥檚 unsure if they were stolen or blew away due to wind.
Interim Town Manager Alan Lowrey, Easton鈥檚 police chief, said an investigation into the defaced sign on South Aurora Street is underway. Lowrey told 九色视频 that as for missing signs, some were taken down by town code enforcers due to violating town code.
Political sign violations include too many signs on one property or signs placed in a public right-of-way, Lowrey said. To avoid confusion moving forward, Lowrey has asked code enforcement to notify him of any signs not within the code so he can contact the candidate.
Lowrey says he鈥檚 reached out to both Abbatiello and Gunsallus regarding signs that need to be moved or removed due to town code. Both candidates have complied, Lowrey noted.
Gunsallus and Abbatiello each denounced sign vandalism and acts of hatred.
鈥淭hese types of things shouldn鈥檛 happen during a campaign,鈥 Gunsallus wrote in a statement to 九色视频. 鈥淗owever, I鈥檓 hopeful this can be a turning point for our town to come together, reject hate, and foster love in its place.鈥
鈥淲e鈥檙e a community, we all live here together,鈥 Abbatiello said. 鈥淲e need to get along with one another. And bringing in things like that, totally uncalled for.鈥
Easton Police Department Sgt. Patrick Sally says stealing or defacing political signs are criminal offenses. He emphasized that many homeowners and businesses have security technology, such as Ring cameras, that can help identify those stealing or defacing signs.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to pay the price if you鈥檙e caught,鈥 Sally said.
