九色视频 鈥 With a little less than a month until Easton residents elect their next council president, incumbent Frank Gunsallus said he is voluntarily reporting his campaign finances.
Gunsallus鈥 announcement came after Easton Mayor Megan Cook and Councilmember David Montgomery shared their efforts to draft a town ordinance related to campaign finances.
The ordinance would require campaign contributions be reported and would limit the amount someone can contribute to a campaign. The town doesn鈥檛 currently have any campaign finance-related laws in place.
In an interview with 九色视频 Monday, Cook said they hope to introduce a draft ordinance at the next Easton Town Council meeting April 21.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been receiving questions from residents and neighbors,鈥 Cook said, 鈥渁nd here鈥檚 a way that we can move forward and better the election process for the community.鈥
Although Cook said this effort is an attempt to address an 鈥渙verall general concern鈥 that isn鈥檛 specific to any one campaign, Montgomery raised concerns with the upcoming town election, which is set for May 6.
鈥淚n my opinion, the elections before this have largely been financed by the candidates themselves,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he candidates have gotten out knocking on doors, sometimes through media, frequently in forums that are put on. ... Nobody before this has tried to flood the town and the roads all over the county with signs and other ways of publicizing their name.鈥
鈥淲e don鈥檛 want that to determine who wins,鈥 he said.
GUNSALLUS鈥 STATEMENT
Gunsallus鈥 statement, which he sent to 九色视频 Monday afternoon, says he 鈥渁grees with and joins hands with鈥 Cook and Montgomery in their efforts to ensure there is more transparency surrounding campaign finances.
“Transparency builds trust, and that’s why I have made the conscious decision to voluntarily report my campaign finances annually through the Maryland Campaign Reporting Information System (MDCRIS),” the statement says. “All citizens are welcome to go to this public website at () and review all elected officials’ financial reporting. Open, consistent financial disclosure is essential to maintaining public confidence in our local government.”
Gunsallus said he has been reporting campaign finance information on the website for years.
As of early Monday evening, the Friends of Frank Gunsallus page showed campaign activity from Jan. 11, 2024, through Jan. 8, 2025. Gunsallus announced his reelection campaign in December.
As of Jan. 8, the committee had paid $639 to APG Chesapeake, which owns 九色视频, for political advertising. The website showed only two contributions, each under $50, from individuals.
Current Ward 2 Councilmember Don Abbatiello, who is running against Gunsallus for the council president seat, said he thinks transparency with campaign finances is important at every level of government.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important that the residents, the voters know exactly who鈥檚 donating to the candidates that they鈥檙e thinking about voting for,鈥 he said.
Abbatiello said he wouldn鈥檛 have a problem sharing his campaign finances with the public.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 have any political party support in this race or any kind of political action committee,鈥 he said, 鈥渟o it鈥檚 all been from individuals donating to the campaign.鈥
Abbatiello said he hasn鈥檛 heard concerns from voters specific to campaign finances in the town鈥檚 upcoming election.
鈥淚 know there were some people questioning about the number of signs around town,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut nobody questioning specifically, 鈥榃here鈥檇 the money come from?鈥欌
Along with the council president seat, candidates are vying for Ward 2 and Ward 4 council seats. In Ward 2, Lynnette D. Keefe and Robert J. Rankin will go head to head. In Ward 4, the race is between incumbent the Rev. Elmer Davis, Moonyene S. Jackson-Amis and Cameron Keefe.
If the council votes to introduce a campaign finance ordinance, a public hearing will need to be scheduled before the council can pass it. As a result, it is unlikely to take effect before the May 6 election.
